O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Watching Later… with Jools Holland the other night, I was shocked to find that The Fratellis had turned from fun, sing-along indie-rock band to rubbishy, sub-Jet pub-rock. And lead singer/guitarist Jon has started to resemble more Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s Peter Hayes than Mark Bolan. WTF, mate?

This song, “Mistress Mabel”, hasn’t exactly got me excited for new album Here We Stand (Christ, it even sounds like it should be a Jet album), which is released on June 9th.

Better of listening to “Baby Fratelli” from their debut, Costello Music, instead.

Justice are racist?

The pretty fucking terrifying video Romain Gavras-directed video for French house act Justice’s new single “Stress” has been condemned as racist, and banned from broadcast by the French goverment.

Which, frankly, makes absolutley no sense. The video depicts a gang of youths enacting some Clockwork Orange-style ultraviolence upon unsupsecting people, keying cars, fighting policeman and generally being a nuisance.

I’m assuming the “objectionable” content is the fact that some of the gang members are black, which is a negative stereotype; however, there are also white and Asian kids in the group. So…how’s it racist? Who knows? Neither Gavras nor Justice themselves have spoke about the video, or the “controversy” surrounding it.

To be honest, I’m more surprised there’s not controversy about the violence in it, which is all pretty visceral and realistic - and it’s all being done by kids. Go figure.

(I do like the fact that, after stealing the car, the kids turn the radio to Justice’s previous hit “D.A.N.C.E”, before kicking the stereo in and throwing it out the window. A sign that the threatening, more abrasive sound of “Stress” is the direction the duo are going to be following? Who knows?)

Is it a video conedming ASBO culture? Is it a condemnation of the tabloid press and their sensationalism concerning violnce in youngsters? Watch it and make up your own mind. Lazy.

Per un pugno di Indie

Remember that Last Shadow Puppets album I talked about a while ago? Well, er, it’s still not out. However, the group’s debut album,The Age Of The Understatement, will be out in almost a week! So that’s good.

Anyway, in the meantime, as a little taster, I have for you (courtesy of Domino Records US) a couple of “stripped down” (that is, with less instruments; the videos on the band’s website show the pair fully clothed) tracks Arctic Monkey Alex Turner and Rascal Miles Kane recorded at the Avatar Studios in New York, around the same time as their impromptu live shows in the city.

We’ve already heard debut eponynmous single “The Age Of The Understatement”, which amplifies the air of spaghetti western when played on acoustic guitar. Meanwhile, previously unheard track “My Mistakes Were Made For You” (the name of which sounds like something that a Phil Spector-produced 60s girl group would put out) is a lot less immediate, though seems like it may be a “grower” - and no doubt sounds a heck of a lot more impressive when, as I’m reliably informed, Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford is drumming/producing and Owen Pallet, aka Final Fantasy, is conducting a 22-piece (!) orchestra, on the finished record.

(FYI, I’ve tagged the song as unplugged, which isn’t entirley true, since Miles Kane is playing his twangy electric guitar; but it’s more unplugged than that Nirvana Unplugged, so what the hey?)
