2008 Preview: The Streets

Mike Skinner, aka The Streets, follows up 2006’s The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living in as little as ten weeks, with an as-yet untitled new album. A song from the album, “Everything Is Borrowed”, appeared briefly on the man himself’ MySpace, before being replaced with a rather nice cover of Elton John’s “Your Song”. Quote from the MySpace…
“I am working on this at the moment but don’t know what it will be called. The biggest song on it, so far, is called ‘Everything Is Borrowed’. I know the title sounds like a Kaiser Chiefs song but I promise it will be better than that. This album started off life as parables but then I realised that it might get a bit cheesy so I got rid of the alien song and the devil song and replaced them with more straight up songs. I’ve pretty much kept my promise that I made to myself not to reference modern life on any of them though which is hard to do and keep things personal at the same time. I am working very very hard”
So it seems Skinner’s abandoning his trademark observations on everyday life (possibly to get away from the bad reputation his “style” has gotten from Kate Nash *hack* *spit*), and going into some “proper” songwriting (other, cynical people’s words, not mine). To be honest, while I enjoyed The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living, there’s only so many songs you can write about your life when you’re rich and famous - which that album proved.
The Elton John cover sounds good, although reportedly “Everything Is Borrowed” is reminiscent of Skinner’s earlier work on debut Original Pirate Material, so we’ll have to wait and see what he does. It’ll most probably be good, though.
