Breaking news: Trent Reznor continues getting more insane

After that whole debacle about releasing a 36-track instrumental album, independently, Nine Inch Nails (aka Trent Reznor and friends) have now released a new, full track (that means vocals and everything!) song via their website.

The track, entitled “Discipline”, was apparently mastered less than 24 hours prior to release, and, as I said, free for you to download from the link above. The song itself is…okay, in a similar vein to the more reserved/less creepy stuff done on With Teeth and Year Zero, but it’s kinda plodding. Digging the little “March of the Pigs”-style piano that comes in halfway through, though.

Oh, and also, the MP3 contains an embedded album art image and the comment “Go to www.nin.com May 5″. So, another new album from Reznor and co? Even if they are somewhat “meh”, at least he know releases one every six months or so. Maybe after a couple more we might be able to piece together a truely good album…

Komakino are dead, long live You Animals

Just a little preface to this: the town I live in sucks. The only music venue is the Victoria Inn, which is okay - but it’s a pub first, and a music venue second. The last good musical act at the local theatre/hall thing (you know, the place they have second-string stand-up comics and clairvoyants) was The Magic Numbers (though they did get Huggy Bear to be in last year’s pantomine). Luckily, the musical Gods have bestowed The Royal upon the people of Derby (after the sumbitches took away Reveal Records. Grr.).

And, playing on the opening night is YOU ANIMALS, an awesome local band who rose from the ashes of awesome local band KOMAKINO (and by rose from the ashes, I mean kept the same line-up and musical style, but just changed the name and added a girl).

YOU ANIMALs are currently recording their debut album (you can see rehearsal/recording diaries on their YouTube, see below), and are, in case I hadn’t mentioned, totally awesome. They keep the same fun, Ash-y punk sound Komakino had, playing fast, choppy and exciting….ly. “Theme From You Animals”, the first song on their MySpace, is currently on constant loop on my PC. It’s rad. The opening is reminiscnet of the guitar line from We Are Scientist’s “After Hours (yes, that review is still coming. Maybe…), and then it’s just…well, fun, Ash-y punk. Go listen! Download “Theme From You Animals” below! Don’t buy all the tickets for their show at The Royal on May 3rd, cause I wanna go!

I Got Knowledge, And Other Suckers Lack It

A bit of old-school gangasta rap, because NWA are awesome. This song, which was featured in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas heavily samples Charles Wright’s classic “Express Yourself”, which you will have heard, even if you didn’t realise it. A lot poppier than you’d ever expect NWA to be, really. Still awesome, mind.
